Writing

At St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that spoken language and writing are fundamental life skills that empower our learners to be the best they can be as children of God. Our ambitious curriculum is designed to nurture in all learners a lifelong love of literature and the skills, knowledge and understanding required to become competent, enthusiastic and imaginative writers. We believe that writing is a vital lifelong skill that can lead to success, positive well-being and self-esteem.

At St Teresa’s, writing is used in all areas of the curriculum and being a skilled writer empowers learners to express their imagination, knowledge, understanding and viewpoints in all subjects. In the world beyond education, being able to write enables our children to participate fully in society.

In our school, writing enables children to develop into reflective thinkers and determined learners who understand that perseverance and the willingness to alter, correct or adapt their writing will lead to success and feelings of pride and accomplishment.

Reading is at the heart of our writing curriculum. Through a love of reading and listening to stories, children develop the skills to retell stories and then go on to enjoy creating their own worlds and characters, thereby entertaining themselves and others through their writing.

As they journey through St Teresa’s, our children learn how to use their writing skills to reach and influence various audiences - to entertain, persuade, inform, explain, discuss and record facts. They become proficient writers who are proud of their abilities and confidently create texts for a range of purposes, leaving lasting impressions on their readers.
